Street was founded by Max Temple in the fall of 2008 and based on Max’s passion for the Blues. The band was quickly noticed due largely to Max’s ability with the guitar as well as the level of music they were able to play. Right out of the gate they were playing music from Stevie Ray Vaughn, B.B King, The Allman Brothers and Eric Clapton. The fact that he was doing all this while only being 16 make 8th Street’s story even more remarkable.
The genesis of Max’s desire to have is own blues band came from being lucky enough to see Walter Trout perform live at Milwaukee’s legendary Shank Hall when he was only 13. After the concert all he had to say was: “I want to do that.” He finally formed 8th Street when he was 16 and they hit the ground running. The most frequent comment heard during or after their performances is: “How does a kid that young know how to play the Blues like that?”
8th Street does their own arrangements of covers from all these influential artists as well as performing many of their own originals. A few of the cover arrangements that alone are worth the price of admission are Stevie Ray’s Crossfire and Tightrope, Clapton’s Born Under A Bad Sign, B.B. King’s I’m Moving On, a screaming version of Tinsley Ellis’ Pawnbroker, Walter Trout’s Dust My Broom, The Allman Brothers Whipping Post and a little good old Texas Blues from ZZ Tops’ Billy Gibbons.
During their short tenure 8th Street has been fortunate to perform at a wide variety of venues. Included are First Fridays and Harvest Fest in Spearfish, Terry Peaks Boulevard Music series and the season ender concert at the Stewart Lodge, Spearfish Foundation for Public Education Annual Fundraising Gala, UCC Biker Breakfast during the Sturgis Rally, a regular monthly gigs at Horses to Harleys in Spearfish as well as Golden Hills Resort in Lead, SD, and the season ending concert at the Spearfish Rec Center. A few of the upcoming performances are First Friday’s in Spearfish, SD along with LA’s Judge Jackson, Midwest Mayhem Festival, and Festival in the Park in Spearfish
